Brazilian Content Dominates Streaming, Capturing Local Audiences

By now, streaming platforms have solidified their position not just as global showcases, but as stages where Brazilian identity is increasingly taking center stage. While the battle once raged primarily with foreign productions, we now observe a clear shift in viewer behavior, with audiences actively seeking stories, faces, and themes that resonate directly with their reality. At Bendita Filmes, we witness this firsthand, whether in discussions with clients looking to license local content or in analyzing the hits topping the most-watched charts.

Mão navega tablet: streaming nacional em alta em 2026, com produções brasileiras de sucesso.

The Power of National Reflection

Recent research from Go Magenta, as reported by Tela Viva, confirms what we experience daily in the market: 64% of Brazilians prefer national sports content. This isn't surprising given the passion for football, but the study also points to other sports with strong local appeal. This data goes beyond mere entertainment; it reflects how audiences connect with their own triumphs, idols, and narratives of overcoming adversity. For us as producers, this signifies a clear opportunity to invest in niches that deeply resonate with Brazilian culture.

This trend isn't limited to sports. Reality shows, with 55% preferring national productions, and documentaries, at 45%, also reveal an audience eager to see their own culture and daily lives portrayed on screen. These formats, by their very nature, draw close to real life. A culinary reality show exploring regional ingredients or a documentary about a specific cultural movement in a Brazilian city connects with viewers in a way generic productions rarely can. It's the so-called 'mirror effect' working at full capacity.

Platforms' Role in Consolidation

Platforms like Globoplay, which on Saturday, June 27, 2026, is releasing the film "The Last Animal", starring Junior Vieira and inspired by true events about illegal gambling in Rio de Janeiro, understand this shift. By investing in narratives that explore the urban underworld and its complexities, they not only offer entertainment but also generate discussion and reflection. The film's availability to all subscribers demonstrates a strategy for broad reach and accessibility for content with a strong Brazilian DNA.

Another example is Prime Video's announcement of the fictional production "Marília", which will tell the story of the eternal Queen of Heartbreak, Marília Mendonça. The choice of a cast deeply connected to the artist and the production being handled by Brazilian companies like Chatrone and Gullane points to an understanding of the value in honoring and preserving the legacy of national icons. This approach, seeking authenticity and depth, is what differentiates productions that become true cultural phenomena.

Interactive Advertising: A New Horizon for Brands and Content

But streaming in 2026 isn't just about entertainment content. The business model is also evolving, and interactive advertising, announced by Netflix Ads for Latin America, opens a new chapter. Starting in July, advertisers will be able to explore formats where the viewer is not just a passive recipient but an active agent. An ad that allows clicking to be directed to the brand's website, or receiving a direct link on their mobile phone, transforms the viewing experience into an opportunity for immediate conversion.

In practice, this represents a democratization of engagement tools. For brands looking to reach streaming audiences, interactive advertising eliminates the need for complex productions and extra costs, integrating with existing campaigns. This is a golden opportunity for content creators and agencies to think about how to integrate brands organically and, now, even more interactively, within audiovisual narratives. The challenge will be to create campaigns that add value to the user experience without being intrusive, and that effectively guide the consumer through the purchase journey.

The Trade-off: Authenticity vs. Global Scale

The major challenge for us, Brazilian producers, is finding the right balance. How can we create content that celebrates our identity and captivates the local audience, while simultaneously maintaining the technical and narrative quality to aim for international reach? The answer, for us at Bendita Filmes, lies in authenticity. There's no point in replicating foreign formulas without proper cultural adaptation.

A practical example: recently, we were involved in a documentary project exploring urban dances in Rio de Janeiro communities. The initial temptation was to use generic international hip-hop soundtracks. However, after much discussion and research, we opted to invest in local artists, with lyrics and rhythms that genuinely reflected the energy of that universe. The result was a much greater impact on the audience, both domestically and at international festivals focused on documentary cinema, which valued the originality and cultural authenticity. The licensing costs were higher, and negotiating with the artists took time, but the gain in relevance and connection with the work was immeasurable.

The streaming market in 2026 is more open than ever to diverse voices and stories that come from the heart of Brazil. The secret for those who produce isn't just knowing how to use cameras or edit a good video, but rather understanding cultural nuances, the passions of our audience, and the opportunities that digital platforms offer to those who know how to tell a good story with our unique flavor.
