Brazilian Cinema's Global Future: Streaming & Co-Productions

The Brazilian audiovisual market is more interconnected and expansive than ever before. Audiovisual production, a reflection of our culture and identity, now greatly benefits from international synergies and the democratized access offered by streaming. Far from being a threat, co-productions and new exhibition windows are proving to be catalysts for the growth and diversification of national cinema.

International Co-productions: Expanding Creative Frontiers

We recently witnessed the announcement of the co-production of "Space Nation", a science fiction series uniting Globoplay, Ex Machina Studios, and Utopai Studios, during the Marché du Film in Cannes. This project exemplifies what international collaboration can bring to Brazilian audiovisuals. By blending talents, resources, and perspectives from different markets, we not only elevate the technical and narrative quality of our productions but also ensure global reach from the outset.

The "Space Nation" Venture

Set in a future where humanity relies on elite pilots to face alien threats, "Space Nation" is a project that embodies ambition. This approach of mixing genres like action, political drama, and emotional conflict, with a robust cinematic vision, is only possible through combined efforts. For us producers, this means access to a wider range of funding, technical expertise, and crucially, the ability to tell stories that resonate with diverse audiences worldwide, without losing our essence.

Manuel Belmar, Digital Products Director at Globo, perfectly summarized the current moment by stating Globoplay's strategy to invest in "stories with great creative potential and global relevance" and how "international co-productions play an increasingly important role in this construction, expanding our access to innovative talent, formats, and narratives." This is an intelligent move to strengthen Globoplay's position and, consequently, Brazilian audiovisuals on the global stage.

The Role of Streaming: New Windows and Conscious Consumption

Parallel to co-productions, streaming continues to redefine the consumption of films and series. Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and of course, Globoplay, have become not just distributors but also key producers and financiers. We saw the consolidation of platform releases in 2024 and 2025, often preceded or accompanied by theatrical releases, as in the case of David Fincher's "The Adventures of Cliff Booth", which had an exclusive IMAX run before hitting streaming. This coexistence is key to maximizing reach and monetization.

Trade-offs in the Streaming Era

For independent Brazilian cinema, streaming represents a unique opportunity to reach audiences that would otherwise be inaccessible. However, the challenge lies in how to stand out in an increasingly saturated catalog. It's not enough to simply have a good film; one must consider the release strategy, communication, and how to connect with the target audience on each platform. Unlike a traditional theatrical release, where the collective experience is paramount, on streaming, the decision to watch is individual and often impulsive. Crafting a "plot" that grabs attention in the first few minutes, or a "hook" that encourages social media sharing, becomes as vital as the quality of the narrative itself.

A practical example we've observed in mid-sized productions is negotiation with platforms. Instead of simply selling the film, we often enter into co-production agreements, which give us more control over the creative process and a share in the profits. The trade-off here is that the platform may have more say in final decisions, but the guarantee of distribution and visibility is immense. For films seeking a more niche or auteur audience, film festivals remain vital for validation and initial buzz, which can then be leveraged by platforms.

Brazilian Cinema: Diversity and Resilience

Brazilian cinema, despite its challenges, has demonstrated impressive resilience. The arrival of new musical comedies like "Quem Tem Com Que Me Pague, Não Me Deve Nada", directed by Ary Rosa and Glenda Nicácio, which premiered in theaters in May 2026, showcases the vitality of diverse genres and the ability to tell stories with a local accent but universal appeal. The plot, intertwining the lives of a frustrated São Paulo filmmaker and a Bahian pagotrap singer, is an invitation to reflect on career, art, and friendship, all wrapped in the cultural richness of the Recôncavo Baiano.

These productions, often starting with lean crews and modest budgets, like the science fiction film with a seven-person team whose development we've followed over the years, prove that creativity and passion can overcome barriers. However, it's crucial to remember that the strength of these independent productions also depends on the support of grants and funding. In 2026, ANCINE and the Audiovisual Law remain important pillars, but it is adaptability and the pursuit of innovative business models that will ensure long-term sustainability.

The Brazilian audiovisual market in 2026 is a vibrant ecosystem where the tradition of theatrical cinema merges with the new dynamics of streaming and the energy of international co-productions. For us at Bendita Filmes, it is a privilege to be part of this transformation, learning and producing content that celebrates our identity and projects national cinema to the world.
