Instagram Reels: Turn Views into Leads

In the whirlwind of content flooding Instagram, the ability for a Reel to stand out and, more importantly, generate tangible results, has become the key differentiator for brands and creators. We've seen many get lost in the euphoria of high view counts, forgetting that the number of times a video is seen is just the tip of the iceberg. Here at Bendita Filmes, having been at the forefront of social media production since 2010, we've learned firsthand that a Reel's true success metric lies in its ability to convert attention into action.

Metrics That Speak Louder Than Views: What Truly Matters

Solely watching the view counter is like driving a car by looking only at the speedometer, ignoring other warning lights and indicators that show engine health and fuel levels. Instagram has matured its perception of valuable content, and the algorithm reflects this. We need to delve deep into engagement and, most importantly, into metrics that point towards real conversion, whatever your project's objective may be.

Deep Engagement: Likes, Comments, Shares, and Saves

Likes still have value, of course, but they're just the first step. What truly shows us that content resonated are comments. Someone who dedicates time to write a question, give feedback, or even defend a point of view in a discussion is genuinely invested. These interactions are incredibly valuable to us. We’ve seen editing tutorial Reels generate dozens of comments with specific questions about a plugin, which gave us the exact direction to create the next video, addressing precisely what the audience wanted to know. It’s these interactions that shape our script and strategy.

Shares are a thermometer of virality and relevance. When a Reel is shared, it not only amplifies our reach but also indicates that the content creator is seen as someone who offers value to their network. Saves, on the other hand, are the clearest signal that your content is useful and has the potential to be consulted in the future. For us, as producers of educational content, saves on technical tutorials or checklists are a strong indicator that we're delivering something with lasting value, something users want to keep and revisit. Once, we created a Reel with a quick step-by-step guide on how to create a specific video transition in CapCut, and the number of saves was surprising. This showed us that the format was ideal for this type of practical content.

Retention and Watch Time: The Fight for Attention

Audience Retention Rate and Average Watch Time are the crucial metrics that tell us if you've captured the viewer's attention. If a Reel has 10,000 views, but the retention is 1 second, it’s as if people just peeked through the door and left immediately. For us, the hook in the first 3 to 5 seconds is sacred. In a recent project for a healthy food brand, we created a Reel showing a quick and appetizing recipe. We noticed that views plummeted after 15 seconds. Analyzing the video, we saw that the initial hook with the finished recipe image was strong, but the introduction of the ingredients list dragged on. We adjusted the pace, cut the intro, and focused on the action. The result? Retention increased by 30% and average watch time rose considerably, positively impacting other indicators.

Reach and Impressions: Expanding Visibility

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your Reel, while Impressions is the total number of times it was displayed. For us, understanding both is fundamental. High reach with few impressions can indicate that your audience sees your content once and moves on. Conversely, lower reach with much higher impressions might mean your audience is loyal and revisits your content. The ideal, of course, is a good balance. We monitor these numbers to understand if our campaigns are reaching new audiences or if we are strengthening the relationship with our existing base.

Optimizing Your Reels for Conversion: From Play to Lead

Having a Reel go viral without generating concrete results is like having a super-powerful race car with no direction to reach its destination. In today's landscape, audiovisual production for Instagram needs a clear purpose. Conversion optimization begins long before you hit the record button.

Define Your Mission: What Action Do You Expect?

First and foremost, ask yourself: what do I want viewers of my Reel to do afterward? Visit my website? Download an e-book? Book a service? Purchase a product? The answer will define your entire content strategy and your Call to Action (CTA).

A common mistake is having a generic CTA like “Learn more.” That no longer works. An effective CTA is specific and directs towards the desired action. For one of our clients who produces online courses, the goal was to drive traffic to the sales page. In our Reels, we used CTAs like: “Tap the link in bio and secure your spot with a 20% discount!” or “Click the link in bio and watch the free class on lighting techniques.” Clarity and urgency, where applicable, make all the difference.

Content That Connects and Drives Action

The content needs to be relevant, valuable, and, above all, solve a problem or spark a desire. For us, the essence lies in:

Educating Practically: Editing tutorials, scriptwriting tips, equipment usage. We want viewers to learn something they can apply immediately.

Inspiring with Behind-the-Scenes: Showing the production process, challenges overcome, the ‘real life’ of a set. This humanizes the brand and creates identification.

Entertaining Intelligently: Using trends and trending audio, but always with a purpose that connects with your audience's and your brand's universe.

Solving Pain Points: Presenting how a product, service, or knowledge can resolve a specific problem for your audience.

It is also crucial to use trending music and effects. Instagram's algorithm tends to boost content that uses popular features. But beware: the music must dialogue with the tone of your video; it can't just be a distracting fad.

The Power of the CTA and Post-Viewing Connection

The CTA should be present naturally, both in the caption and in the video itself. A strong phrase with a clear benefit is what will encourage clicks. Furthermore, it's crucial to interact with comments and DMs. Often, a question in a comment leads to a conversation that ends in a conversion. Ignoring these interactions means missing golden opportunities.

In-Depth Analysis: Turning Data into Strategic Decisions

Analyzing metrics isn't an exercise in vanity, but rather the compass that guides us. With the variety of formats and tools available, it's easy to get lost in a sea of numbers. The secret is to focus on what truly matters for your objectives.

Prioritizing Key Metrics

For us, the hierarchy of metrics is clear: deep engagement (comments, shares, saves) and conversion metrics (link clicks, profile visits, DMs, acquired followers) come before pure reach. A Reel with fewer views but high engagement and link clicks is a much bigger success than one with millions of views and zero subsequent action.

Understanding Audience Profile

Instagram Insights offers a valuable overview of who our audience is: age, gender, location, peak activity times. Using this information to refine language, themes, and posting times is fundamental. If we notice that most of our most engaged followers are women between 25-35 years old in São Paulo, we adapt our content to resonate with that demographic.

Continuous Testing and Adaptation

The only constant in digital marketing is change. Testing different hooks, video formats (more dynamic, more explanatory), CTAs, and even posting times is essential. We saw a client, an accessories brand, realize that Reels demonstrating products in use, with real people wearing the items in everyday situations, generated significantly more saves and link clicks than Reels focusing solely on the static product. This constant adaptation, based on data, is what keeps us relevant.

Practical Example of Analysis and Action

For a documentary we were producing about the history of Brazilian cinema, we created a series of Reels with short, impactful clips from classic films, accompanied by trivia. The metrics showed very high engagement, with many saves and comments asking about the films and directors. The CTA was to visit the documentary's official website. Result: Within weeks, we observed a 40% increase in website traffic, and engagement on posts about the documentary exploded. This showed that the short, intriguing format, combined with valuable historical content, was the right way to spark audience interest in the main project.

Common Mistakes That Sabotage Your Reels Performance

To avoid falling into traps, it's important to be aware of the most frequent mistakes we observe in the market.

Excessive focus on views: As already mentioned, high view counts without meaningful engagement or action are hollow victories.

Lack of a clear CTA: Ambiguous or missing calls to action leave viewers unsure of what to do next.

Ignoring audience feedback: Comments and DMs are direct lines to understanding viewer needs and preferences.

Inconsistent content: Sporadic posting and lack of a defined content theme confuse the audience and hinder algorithm performance.

Poor hook or pacing: Failing to capture attention in the first few seconds or having a slow pace leads to high drop-off rates.
